Challenges in Academic Writing and Research Among Lecturers in Osun State University, Nigeria

Background: Despite the benefits and emphasis on academic writing and research, academics still encounter many challenges. The purpose of this study was to investigate the persistent difficulties encountered by lecturers in writing and publishing and to suggest strategies for improvement.
Methodology: A questionnaire-based descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among members of academic staff of Osun State University across the campuses. Information was sought to ascertain if the respondents experienced difficulty with academic research and publishing, the nature of the difficulties and possible strategies to mitigate them.
Results: The study investigated 125 respondents aged 20 years and above, with the majority, 89 (71.2%), falling within the 40-59-year age range. The male-to-female ratio was 1:1.02. Senior lecturers were the highest in number, 33 (26.4%). One hundred and eight (86.4%) respondents reported having some challenges with writing, and in order of frequency, the most common difficulties experienced were poor staffing (87, 80.6%), internet instability (84, 77.8%), and cost of research and publishing (82, 75.9%). The least common reasons were lack of interest (52, 48.1%) and inability to generate research topics (50, 46.3%). The commonest reasons given for lack of time were teaching and family responsibilities in 48 (68.6%) and 46 (65.7%), respectively. Social engagement and many concurrent research projects were the least responsible in 22 (31.4%) and 8 (11.4%), respectively.
Conclusion: This study revealed that most lecturers in the reference university experienced difficulties in research/publishing. Reduction of administrative workload, provision of funding for research and employment of adequate staff members are some of the suggestions to mitigate this challenge.
